Washoe County Chooses STACS DNA™ Software

August 20, 2012

OTTAWA, ON, August 20, 2012STACS DNA Inc., the only DNA sample processing software provider, today announced that the Washoe County
Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) has selected STACS-DB Enterprise™ to manage its DNA sample processing.

According to Steve Gresko, Senior Criminalist and CODIS Administrator for the State of Nevada, “We chose STACS® software to help us save time and eliminate processing hassles. Lab analysts and law enforcement professionals will be able to access reliable data right away.”

WCSO is turning to a STACS solution to streamline processes associated with:

  1. Managing outsourced sample processing;
  2. Controlled access to information by appropriate staff inside and outside the lab; and
  3. Maintaining data integrity.

The lab’s current database is showing signs that it can no longer manage their processing volumes. While WCSO outsources their DNA processing to private labs, staff still needs to track every sample and track the NIJ outsourcing grants. In addition, the labs’ seven analysts can only verify data once a spreadsheet has been copied, pasted and emailed to them, causing extra work and delays. STACS-DB Enterprise provides instant access to all sample data and an integrated process for verification. It also provides the County room to grow.

Equally important is an opportunity for cost savings. When law enforcement members who collect samples can determine that an offender’s sample is already in the database, they can eliminate collecting and processing that duplicate sample. Based on estimates from other state DNA labs using STACS-DB Enterprise, this could reduce costs by up to 20%.
