In 2014, the FBI reported through Uniform Crime Reports approximately 116,000 rapes using the revised UCR definition. According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS)–there is an average of 293,066 victims (age 12 or older) of rape and sexual assault each year. Funding is being provided by the Federal Government to process the hundreds of thousands of backlogged, untested Sexual Assault Kits (SAKs) currently sitting in property rooms across the country. This is having an immediate effect on law enforcement agencies and laboratories, both government and private. In this workshop, Tim Stacy will examine the current legislation directed at SAK testing and SAK tracking. Shawn Bailes will demonstrate how MSHP processes sexual assault kits using STACS-CW. Lauren Lu will discuss Michigan State Police’s approach to tracking sexual assault kits.
